We have found our first SHB in Eastern Ontario. Jim Anderson and I found
a single adult in a bottom board trap and the sample has just been
confirmed.
Here are the details on the situation:
•Commercial Beekeeper several colonies
•All yards located in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengary
•Does not sell bees or queens
•Find was just east of Cornwall
•Has other yards in close proximity to other commercial beekeepers in the
area, including some that sell bees
•Infested yard is within 10 km of New York State where SHB is resident
So far there are no signs of SHB in any other site in Eastern Ontario,
including the other yards that have been trapped.
We will be doing targeted inspections of the operation and surrounding
yards to establish the scope of SHB in this region. At this time it is
just the one sight that we know of.
The data from field inspections immediately outside of the Quarantine Area
supports the fact that SHB is not outside of the Quarantine Area in
Southern Ontario.
